The thought of planning any event can be daunting, but planning possibly the biggest event of your life is downright terrifying. If you aren’t an experienced wedding planner, planning your own wedding can seem like an impossible task, but here are some tips to help keep you from becoming a bridezilla on your big day.

You’ll want to begin by getting yourself organized. A good way to do this is by starting  a binder. This binder will contain cutouts of clothing, decorations and food from various sources (i.e. bridal magazines and internet websites.) This binder will give you and anyone else assisting you in the preparations an idea of what you’re looking for. You also want to use this binder to keep any information you’ve found on florists, photographers, entertainers and caterers. Another way to stay organized is by starting a wedding website. This will help you stay organized and keep those in your wedding party informed.

You’ll want to have all of your vendors and venues set up at least 8 months prior to your wedding. When hiring entertainment for your wedding, book a few entertainers to see which one performs best in front of a crowd.

Next, you’ll want to set up a budget. You need to figure out how much you plan on spending based on how much money you’re putting in and how much your family may have contributed. After this, you’ll need to make a budget for the individual components of the wedding: clothing, food, invites, gifts, entertainment, etc.  You’ll also want to set some extra money aside in the event that an extra person shows up or the band you hired is expecting to be fed.

It’s also important to choose your wedding party. As soon as you’ve announced your engagement, your friends and family are going to want to know who has been chosen.

The bridesmaids and groomsmen should be notified immediately upon your decision, as they’ll also be needing to purchase custom bridesmaid dresses and tuxedos to accommodate the bride.

There are a few steps you can take if you’re looking to cut costs while planning your wedding. One way to cut costs is to reduce the number of guests attending your wedding. This means you’ll be spending less money on invites, food and wedding party gifts. If you’re not hell-bent on planning the wedding by yourself, you could hire a planner, who may have connections with other vendors.

When planning your wedding, you want to reserve the date and location in advance; This saves you the irritation of finding out that the nice hotel or banquet hall you had planned on using had other arrangements the day of your wedding.

If you’ve booked a separate place for the ceremony and the reception, you’ll need to factor in travel time between the two places. It’s important to reserve a block of hotel rooms and make accommodations for parking near the venue(s) for out-of-town guests.
