Bride’s Younger Sister Defies The Odds

Bridesmaid Inspiration In yet another inspiring bridal story, a young bridesmaid defied the odds of never walking again to make sure she was there for her big sister on her big day. One night while driving home, a deer jumped in front of 18 year old Mackenzie Gordon’s car – and as a result of avoiding the deer, she swerved, flipping her car into a ditch and breaking her neck.

Doctors told Mackenzie that she would never be able to stand on her own two feet again, let alone walk, but with her big sister’s wedding day on the horizon, she made it her personal goal to be able to walk down the aisle.

“I never accepted that I couldn’t walk again,” the captain of her cheerleading squad explained, “If I don’t want to be in the chair, I’ve got to do something myself to get out of it.”

Some of Mackenzie’s locomotor therapy documented on video.

It was when her new doctor at a new hospital was also paralyzed, and she realized that her dreams were not out of reach (especially since she had wanted to study to become a nurse) and she could still achieve them. By using a form of therapy called “locomotor therapy,” the motions of walking are recreated with force until the spinal cord essentially regains its memory.

So, it started with being able to stand just over 20 seconds, then after two months, those seconds turned into about five minutes – and soon enough, Mackenzie walked down the aisle in the same shoes as the other bridesmaids and stood beside her sister.

Way to go, Mackenzie!
