What Brides Should NOT Expect From Bridesmaids

Now, as a bride, we understand that choosing your few favorite best friends can be a difficult task, but it’s important to never ask the one’s that you expect to give you some unnecessary gifts. What the bride needs to understand is that your bridesmaids are taking on enough of a financial and emotional responsibility simply by saying, “Yes.” Therefore, it’s important to work with them and accept what each one can offer you – on a support level, not financial.

So, with all that being said, what are the top 5 things that brides should never EXPECT from their bridesmaids? Let us go ahead and tell you.

Don’t Expect Weight-Loss

One of the worst things you can expect from your bridesmaids is that they will lose an extreme amount of weight before your wedding. Whether you feel they’re a little overweight, or if you’re worried they may stress eat – you asked them to be your bridesmaid as they are, not as you want them to be.

Don’t Plan On Receiving Some BIG Gift

Think about it this way – your bridesmaids are already spending money on the potential destination wedding, bridal shower, bachelorette party, as well as their dresses and hair/make-up. Do you really think it’s fair to expect some massive, expensive gift? Honestly, the best thing for you to do is just be happy they showed up and have been supporting you throughout all your wedding stress. They’re emotional support, not financial.

Don’t Make The Bachelorette A Destination

Trips can be expensive – that’s the bottom line. As we’ve mentioned before, it’s important to keep their budget in mind, just as you keep your wedding budget in mind. The bachelorette doesn’t have to be in Vegas or somewhere international, it just has to be somewhere fun where all you girls can take out her single life with a bang!

Don’t Think They Can Read Your Mind

Yes, they may be your best friends, but if they haven’t been able to read your mind over the past few years, they still probably can’t now. Therefore, you need to be vocal about what you want and don’t just let the bridesmaids battle it out to make the decision for you.

Don’t Anticipate Them Being Perfect

This is one of the worst things you could do – and this is the cardinal rule. It wraps in the above four tipsr while also bringing in other points. Your bridesmaids are going through a lot of emotions as their best friend gets married off into the real world, and weddings are no cheap affair. So, accept them for who they are, you asked your bridesmaids individually for a reason and it’s best to just trust they’ll be there for you as often and as best as they can.

My Journey to Capitol Hill: Fight against Counterfeiters

If you don’t know already, Intellectual Property theft affects every industry and as a small business owner, it is something I deal with and fight against every day because it makes it very hard to survive.   When you have an idea or design and you work hours upon hours, pour blood, sweat and money into starting your business and putting your ideas out there and then you find your images, your name, your dress designs on thousands of rogue websites selling counterfeit versions of you….well, you can imagine the frustration!

What makes it worse is when you hear countless stories from brides who ordered from these sites, being scammed into receiving a dress that is nothing like the one in the photo and then have nobody to turn to because it’s not actually the designer’s dress.  On our website, LizFields.com, we have created a “Buyer Beware” section to try and educate women shopping for wedding dresses or bridesmaids dresses on how to spot these fakes and we even created a tool where you can type in the web address where you saw a Liz Fields dress and we will tell you right away if this is a counterfeit site or an authorized retailer.  Unfortunately, not many take the time or even think to check with us before making a purchase.

For a little while now, I have been in contact with the US Chamber of Commerce Global Intellectual Property Center, which does so much to support small businesses like mine from IP theft and educate us on what we can do to protect ourselves.  Recently, they gave me the opportunity to be part of a panel of speakers at a Small Business event at Capitol Hill.  Yesterday this briefing took place and I was able to tell my story to Congress staffers with the hope that it would resonate and some reforms could begin to take place.

That's me on Capitol Hill!! :)

That’s me on Capitol Hill!! :)

I loved Washington, DC since going to college there, but now, I have a renewed respect for all those who work to try and make reforms on behalf of us.  It’s no easy task…and as I saw yesterday, a lot goes into getting these conversations started and then keeping them going to the finish line.  Regardless, it reminded me that we are so lucky to live in a country where these conversations are even possible.

I had the pleasure of meeting some amazing people and I look forward to continuing my effort, no matter how small, in getting heard and reform started.

For now, please educate yourselves and others around you.  If the price is too good to be true, then it is probably not authentic.  If you aren’t sure about the Liz Fields dress listing you are seeing on a site, check with us on our Buyer Beware section.  You can also check out Bridal Beware more more information on counterfeit gowns and shopping tips.  If it’s something else you’re shopping for, check with the company’s website to make sure you are purchasing from an authorized retailer.   I will be posting some resources and links to this blog shortly so please stay tuned and I’ll keep you updated on my journey.

Avril’s Recent Wedding Defies Conventional Ideals

custom bridesmaid dresses

Singer Avril Lavigne

When we were planning our dream weddings as little girls, most of us aimed for a more traditional approach: the white beaded dress with the long train and simple, dewy  makeup. Singer Avril Lavigne threw all of that out the window for her recent wedding to fellow musician Chad Kroeger. Her wedding, which took place in a castle in France was anything but traditional. Lavigne and her groom walked down the aisle in all black, Lavigne’s eyes lined with thick, black liner.

Celebrities are often challenging the norm when it comes to walking down the aisle, however most of us can’t afford to go that over-the-top. In today’s society, where pop culture influences us in so many ways, how can we enjoy a less-traditional wedding while avoiding pushing the boundaries of good taste? Here are some wedding do’s and don’ts.

First Steps

First is something you should definitely do. Make it a point to match your gown to your location. If you’re getting married somewhere special, make your dress match. If you’re having a more simple, elegant reception, opt for a more traditional gown to avoid clashing. If your wedding is taking place in a more tropical setting, consider a shorter, tea-length dress with a pair of fun shoes. You may even consider going barefoot!

Don’t let your desire for a classy wedding reception scare you away from your dream dress. Even if your dress is low-cut and seemingly inappropriate, you can always dress it up with a sash. Not only does this class up your look, it also adds something extra to it. Ultimately, your dress is your decision on your big day! Don’t allow family or friends to dictate the dress you’ll be walking down the aisle in.

Love Your Shoes

Do have a little fun when it comes to your footwear. If you’re having your wedding on the beach, you may opt for flip-flops instead of heels. During winter, it may not be comfortable or practical to wear sandals or heels so it’s perfectly okay to go for fuzzy snow boots under your gown. If the weather permits it, go crazy with your shoes!

Definitely don’t attend your own wedding looking more casual than your guests. If you’ve painstakingly made sure everyone in your wedding party is dressed like they’re attending a formal event, you’d better do the same! Dressing casually for your own wedding could throw off the whole event.

Wedding Day Musts

Do go against traditional ideals. In this day and age, it’s more important than ever for weddings to stand out above the rest. Since we’re not as conventional as our counterparts from previous generations, today’s brides are less inclined for the plain, a-lined white gown. Before making any final decisions regarding dresses, make sure to get your officiant’s blessing first.

Do choose a train that’s appropriate for the location of your wedding. For example, opt for a shorter veil as opposed to a train when holding your ceremony on the beach. You want to avoid damaging delicate fabrics by dragging them across the sand.

Defying convention in lieu of a more memorable and unique ceremony doesn’t have to mean completely pushing the boundaries of good taste. You can do small things like wearing festive shoes under your gown, or even adding a sash to make your sexy gown appear a little more modest. These things will make your wedding more personal to you and still keep things classy.

It’s a Party Dress, Not a Uniform- Why it’s Important For Bridesmaids to Be Comfortable

custom bridesmaid dress

As every little girl grows up, they ultimately envision their perfect wedding at one point in their life or another. They have the perfect dress, the perfect husband, but then something they do not look into until they’re older; bridesmaid’s dresses.

Bridesmaid’s dresses have plagued women for years and become the ritual that could formally be titled “How Bad Do I Look in This?” Where does the history of bridesmaids dresses turn sour? It could be the invention of taffeta, or the invention of any fabric that makes a noise as your walk. However, as the decades of weddings go by, it is always the bride that makes the final decision on what you’ll be wearing in the photos she’ll carry around for a lifetime, but why have these dresses allowed fashion to take an 80’s step back? Because it’s the bride’s wedding, not yours.

However, there has been a shift in the atmosphere, and brides are beginning to show a little more sympathy for their bridal party. As many women know, bridesmaid’s dresses are one of the key staples in the wedding process. As many colors and cuts have been generically used, and the population of taffeta declining; designers are beginning to show trendier looks. These new looks are displaying more flexible cuts, new color combinations, and they are carrying some amazing designer labels on the neck.

This poses the next problem, the price of bridesmaid’s dresses. If one has ever seen bridesmaids, in the pivotal food poisoning scene at the bridal store that had many rolling on the floor laughing, there is more to it than just horrible food from a back alley Mexican restaurant. It was about the fact that these women could not agree on the cost of a dress! For the brides reading this; let your designated handlers (i.e. bridesmaids) have about 55% of the decision in what they will be wearing for close to 24 hours. These dresses, according to fact, need to get your bridesmaids through chasing after what you cannot find (cell phone, ring, champagne glass), thousands of photos, and dancing all night long at the reception. So, please, for all the brides out there, think about your bridesmaids because in the end, these dresses are not meant for any other event besides that full day. Let the gals have a little leeway in their dresses. Of course, you still determine the color, and you cannot have them upstage you, but find the happy medium, because no one needs the extra stress of an unhappy bridesmaid. So, take a moment and put on the bridesmaids shoes, even though the whole point was that you did not have to, and try to understand that they want their custom bridesmaid dress to be a party dress just like yours. They don’t want to be wearing a uniform.

Bad Dress Etiquette: Are You A Good Bridesmaid?

So your best girlfriend since Kindergarten is getting married. If you haven’t been included in the selection process, you’re likely being emailed a link to the terrible bridesmaid dress she’s requesting you wear to the festivities.
Is there any way to get around wearing that awful thing or do you suck it up and swallow your pride? After all, you’ll only have to wear that dress once.

                                                                              Bridesmaid Dresses Wrong

There are some instances where it’s okay to speak up about your dress. The bride should take into account that unless all of her friends are Stepford Wives, no two women are going to look exactly the same. The style of dress chosen for the bridesmaids should be equally flattering on all shapes. That being said, if your dress doesn’t flatter your figure, it’s perfectly fine to speak up. I mean, there are

Another reason to speak up is cost. It can be downright expensive being a bridesmaid. It can cost up to $1,000.00 for a bridesmaid to attend the wedding. If the dress the bride selected is a little above your price range, it’s perfectly acceptable to inquire about a less expensive, but equally tasteful option.
You’ll want to remember that when addressing any issues with the bride, that you don’t want to be confrontational. Keeping a calm head is more likely to yield results after all!

In situations when your grievance is not about function or finance, it may not be appropriate to complain about your dress to the bride. If you’re just not digging the color of the dress or the ruffles on the bust, then you may be out of luck. When dealing with your friends, sometimes you need to bite the bullet and take one for the team. Your dear friend will (hopefully) only be marrying once, so this is the last time you’ll have to look at that dress.

Bacon Themed Wedding Wins Newlyweds a Honeymoon

custom bridesmaid dresses
A recent pork lovers contest found a newlywed couple having a bacon themed wedding that won them a honeymoon to the pork capital of the world: Baltimore, MD. The couple had everything from bacon wrapped bouquets to throwing bacon bits at the end of the ceremony instead of rice. Not all newlyweds envision their dream wedding to be covered in bacon, and if you’re stressed out about wedding planning there are a number of things that you can do to ensure that your big day goes as smoothly as possible.

Your wedding can be one of the most hectic moments that you and your partner will experience together. In many cases the bride gets so caught up in making sure that the wedding is picture perfect that they begin to lose the value of why they’re planning a wedding in the first place. There are a lot of decisions that the groom takes no part in, depending on the type of relationship you have. Trying to plan a wedding that is for the both of you will help eliminate much of the stress that wedding planning can bring into a relationship. You must remember every day to value your partner, and not to get lost in your wedding plans. A wedding is just for the day, a marriage is for a lifetime. Ensuring that you continue to do the things you did before the wedding plans as a couple will help keep you both happy.

Ask for help, weddings can be fun to plan if you allow for others to help you when you need it. There will be times that decisions will be made without both the bride and groom, and these are the moments where you can call your friends and family and have fun with your decision making. While allowing others to partake in your wedding, usually the bridal party and in laws, it will give your wedding day more value to those who aren’t getting married that day. This will also alleviate some of the stress and feelings of being overwhelmed. In addition, having help gives you the security that you aren’t handling everything on your own when your partner is unavailable.

A major thing to always remember when planning your wedding is to keep an open mind and open heart. There will be times where the idea you’ve had in your mind just won’t work out the way you want it to, and by remaining open-minded you will automatically reduce the stress of having everything done a certain way. It’s great to have a specific idea of how you want your wedding to look like and your wedding day to go, however life is unexpected and it would be silly to put all your coins in one bag. Always have a plan B, this way if something does happen you’re already prepared for it. Being nervous and stressed out is normal, but having your heart and mind set on one thing that may or may not work can lead to disaster. For instance, are you planning an outdoor wedding? You should definitely have a plan B in case the weather doesn’t turn out the way you had hoped.

Always remember that this wedding is to celebrate the love between you and your future lifelong partner, try not to turn against each other while planning this big day. Continue to show each other love and appreciation. A happy marriage starts with a happy and healthy relationship. This can and will get crazy during the time that your wedding is being planned, particularly when it comes to picking out custom bridesmaid dresses, so just make sure to not get crazy on each other, unless it’s in a good way. The smoothest and best part of a wedding will ultimately be with the bride and groom’s happiness.

John Travolta Crashes Weekend Wedding in Georgia

wedding_picture
John Travolta traveled to Georgia last week in order to have his pilots license renewed and while he was there he met a couple that was to be wed the following day. The three were all out together at a bar, and shared drinks and stories. The next day, Travolta surprised the couple by showing up at their wedding in jeans and a baseball cap. Despite his attire, the couple was thrilled, and the bride, groom and bridal part all took pictures with Travolta. This is not the first time that John Travolta has crashed a wedding. In 1977 he and Robin Williams walked in on a ceremony in Santa Barbara. The seasoned wedding crasher gave the lucky couple a memorable experience that made their big day even more special than it would have originally been.

It’s no big surprise that not everyone can have a celebrity drop in at their wedding but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t things that you can do in order to ensure that your wedding turns out to be the most memorable day of your life. Having a ceremony that includes your friends and family is usually enough of a reason to make your wedding day one of the most special experiences that you will ever have. The venue also plays a big role in how memorable your wedding day will be. That being said, it’s important to take extra care when determining which venue to hold your wedding at. Through the decor, venue, and landscape you can create nearly any type of atmosphere you want.

It’s also important to take advantage of the wedding menu planning to the best of your ability. Make sure that when you are planning the menu, you take into account everything that you want your wedding to entail. If you have a specific theme, you can use the menu in order to highlight the theme and make sure that your guests are well fed and happy. The menu can often be one of the biggest highlights of the wedding so it’s important to take great care when it comes to planning out the food that you intend to serve.

Pay special attention to the attire at your wedding because you will be photographed in pictures that will be around for the rest of your life. Make sure that if you are wearing a custom wedding dress and having your bridesmaids wear custom bridesmaid dresses that you choose a designer with an impeccable reputation. The dresses should fit perfectly and at the same time appear well made and be comfortable. The wedding photos are one of the most important aspects when it comes to building life long memories and therefore it’s important that you make wise choices when it comes to your wedding attire.

Sean Parker Pays 2.5 Million to Wed in an Environmentally Sensitive Location

custom bridesmaid dresses
Big Sur is located on the central coast of California, and refers to the area where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise out of the Pacific Ocean. This beautiful location is not an ideal spot for having a wedding, as the terrain is rough and there are many endangered plants and animals that could be sensitive to the presence of a large group of people. For Sean Parker, co-founder of Napster and former Facebook president, none of this seemed to matter. Parker has just paid 2.5 million dollars to appease the California Coastal Commission in exchange for being able to follow through with his wedding plans.

Parker commissioned and went through with major construction plans in the area before the Commission caught wind of what was going on. Once the plans were already in motion, the Commission couldn’t stop the construction. Parker has already built a small village in the beautiful coastal region. Rather than demand that he tear down the structure, they settled with Parker who was said to have been very cooperative and kind. Parker has also agreed to develop a mobile app that brings awareness to the environmental issues that the region faces. The dismantling of the construction will be overseen by environmental professionals in order to ensure that the local community and the region are not disturbed. The wedding took place last weekend and was said to have cost nearly 15 million dollars.

This type of wedding budget is obviously not typical, and if you are looking to have a beautiful wedding in a lush location, you can do so without being a billionaire. The fact that Parker chose such a sensitive location and had to build his own village in order to sustain the people who were in attendance speaks volumes to the convenience of the location. It’s important that when you are choosing a wedding destination, you are practical about the money that you’ll need to spend in order to accommodate your wedding party. Destination weddings can be tricky and many people find that some of their closest friends and family are not able to attend the event due to the inconvenience of travel and/or being able to afford accommodations. Always keep in mind other peoples budgets, especially when it comes to planning a destination wedding. Your wedding day is something that you’ll remember for the rest of your life and therefore you want to take every measure possible in order to ensure that your closest loved ones are in attendance, even if that means cutting back on the money that they will have to spend in order to be in attendance on your big day.
