What Brides Should NOT Expect From Bridesmaids

Now, as a bride, we understand that choosing your few favorite best friends can be a difficult task, but it’s important to never ask the one’s that you expect to give you some unnecessary gifts. What the bride needs to understand is that your bridesmaids are taking on enough of a financial and emotional responsibility simply by saying, “Yes.” Therefore, it’s important to work with them and accept what each one can offer you – on a support level, not financial.

So, with all that being said, what are the top 5 things that brides should never EXPECT from their bridesmaids? Let us go ahead and tell you.

Don’t Expect Weight-Loss

One of the worst things you can expect from your bridesmaids is that they will lose an extreme amount of weight before your wedding. Whether you feel they’re a little overweight, or if you’re worried they may stress eat – you asked them to be your bridesmaid as they are, not as you want them to be.

Don’t Plan On Receiving Some BIG Gift

Think about it this way – your bridesmaids are already spending money on the potential destination wedding, bridal shower, bachelorette party, as well as their dresses and hair/make-up. Do you really think it’s fair to expect some massive, expensive gift? Honestly, the best thing for you to do is just be happy they showed up and have been supporting you throughout all your wedding stress. They’re emotional support, not financial.

Don’t Make The Bachelorette A Destination

Trips can be expensive – that’s the bottom line. As we’ve mentioned before, it’s important to keep their budget in mind, just as you keep your wedding budget in mind. The bachelorette doesn’t have to be in Vegas or somewhere international, it just has to be somewhere fun where all you girls can take out her single life with a bang!

Don’t Think They Can Read Your Mind

Yes, they may be your best friends, but if they haven’t been able to read your mind over the past few years, they still probably can’t now. Therefore, you need to be vocal about what you want and don’t just let the bridesmaids battle it out to make the decision for you.

Don’t Anticipate Them Being Perfect

This is one of the worst things you could do – and this is the cardinal rule. It wraps in the above four tipsr while also bringing in other points. Your bridesmaids are going through a lot of emotions as their best friend gets married off into the real world, and weddings are no cheap affair. So, accept them for who they are, you asked your bridesmaids individually for a reason and it’s best to just trust they’ll be there for you as often and as best as they can.

Don’t Expect Them To Find The Perfect DJ, that Plays Non Stop Music You Love!

In NYC and the sounding areas, quality disc jockeys are a rarity.  From the downtown club hopper slinging the next Miley Cyrus jam, to the up and coming performers of Albany New York, getting the highest level service is one of toughest tasks.  Below is a perfect example of Class, Passion, and Professionalism:

Bridesmaid Dresses, The Groom and How to Have a Modern Wedding

Custom Bridesmaid Dresses

Planning a wedding nowadays is a much more modernized process than in the past. It is because of this fact that wedding planning no longer has to be a stress inducing endeavor. As long as you keep in mind your needs and the needs of your significant other, planning your big day should be an experience that you enjoy. By refreshing your perspective, everything from the bridesmaid dresses to the wedding cake can be handled with ease.

Include the Groom

Allow the groom to be a part of the wedding planning process. Part of having a modern wedding is remembering to include your groom in the decision making process. Weddings will bring you and your significant lover closer together, and you should both be included in all of the decisions that are made regarding your big day. If your groom doesn’t want to be included in every single decision, ask him which ones are important to him and include him in those decisions. For instance, it may not be important for him to have a say in the bridesmaid dresses, but he may want to express his opinion on the wedding cake.

Bridesmaids

Don’t force your bridesmaid into unflattering attire. Modern weddings are a way to allow your bridesmaids some freedom when it comes to their bridesmaid dresses. Don’t force them to wear anything that is going to make them feel uncomfortable or unflattering. Take a modern approach by giving guidance, such as the color, to bridesmaids and then allowing them to choose which fit works best for them. Keep in mind that each one of your bridesmaids does not have to match perfectly. Picking out custom bridesmaid dresses should be a fun experience that everyone enjoys.

Menu

Put together a menu that is modern and that reflects your personalities. Try to stray away from traditional foods that people would expect to have at a wedding and focus more on what you like. Don’t be afraid to showcase your personal taste preferences by going vegan or ethnic and offering your guests a large variety so they are more likely than not to find something that they like. Also, don’t be afraid to boast local vendors and have your rehearsal dinner at a restaurant that showcases the best food that your city has to offer. This is especially helpful during the summer when vegetables and produce are at their peak and can be shown off to all of your guests.

Say Goodbye to Tradition

There is nothing wrong with a traditional wedding but if you want to plan something more modern, don’t be afraid to throw caution to the wind by stepping away from certain longstanding traditions that may have you missing out on throwing the perfectly modern wedding. Your wedding day is just that-yours. Don’t be afraid of what other people will say and think because chances are they will be refreshed at the idea of something new. People easily tired of the same old thing, and changing things up a bit will give your guests something to talk about for years to come.

Getting Organized for Your Wedding

Custom Wedding Dresses

One of the biggest mistakes a couple can make is being unorganized during the wedding planning process.

Staying organized will help everything run smoothly and will pay off for you in the long run. Oftentimes, couples will bask in the glow of their engagement for so long that the wedding approaches quicker than they expected, and they are left with only a few months to plan the entire wedding. It’s important to enjoy your engagement, but make sure that you are also planning parts of your wedding in the meantime. Having a beautiful engagement will mean very little if planning your wedding ends up being an unnecessary headache.

Buy a Datebook

Having a calendar or datebook will help you stay organized with appointments and deadlines. You will be surprised at how much there is to keep track of. On the other hand, keeping all your important dates organized it actually really easy with a little organization.

Set Time Aside For Planning

If you’re like most couple, one or both of you are probably working full time. Rather than spread your wedding planning over a few days after work and in between real life duties, set aside days at a time to devote strictly to wedding planning. This will ultimately reduce stress and help you be more productive when it comes to planning your wedding. If your spouse wants to be a part of the process, chose a day when both of you don’t have to work and a day you can both take off work to devote to planning your wedding together. Communication is one of the most important factors of wedding planning. As long as you and your partner are on the same page, your plans should run smoothly. Don’t be afraid to be open about what you like and don’t like and never hold your opinions back unless they are going to hurt another person’s feelings.

Be Flexible

You and your partner are not always going to agree 100% and this is okay. Disagreeing from time to time is the sign of a healthy relationship. Be prepared to make small sacrifices and the process will be a lot less of a headache. Compromise is key when it comes to planning a wedding. For the most part, the areas you disagree on will be small compared to the grand scheme of things.

Filing

Keep all of your vendor contracts in the same place. Make sure that you have access to important paperwork whenever you need it. Keeping everything in the same place will help you keep track of important documents and have them readily available when you need them. Contracts will contain fees and other important details that you’ll want to keep readily available.

Liz Fields is Getting Hitched: Part I

So, the secret is out….I am getting married!

In just about 2 weeks,  my fiance and I will be tying the knot during an intimate ceremony for our family and closest friends in Miami, Florida.  We opted for a small destination wedding and a big honeymoon…Bora Bora here we come!

The #1 question I have been getting is, “What does your wedding dress look like?” or the comedic,  ”Which bridal gown designer are you wearing?”  To set the record straight, YES, I am wearing a Liz Fields wedding dress and NO, I’m not telling you what it looks like! That would ruin the surprise, so you’ll just have to wait and see.  I can tell you, however, that I’m a simple gal and have a soft-spot for gorgeous lace.

This past weekend, my closest friend, Shana, organized a Bachelorette night of dinner & drinks at Sofrito NYC.  Here are a few photos from the evening.

After the honeymoon, I will post tons of photos and fill you in on all the details of my dress, bridesmaid dresses, accessories,  music, flowers, cake, etc.

For now, post your questions here, on facebook, or twitter and I’ll answer them the best I can!

Who is wearing Liz Fields: Mimi Weingart!

Mimi Weingart first contacted us at the end of May, desperately in search of Liz Fields bridesmaid dress style 237 which she had fallen in love with and wanted to wear to a wedding.  We were able to locate a Liz Fields authorized retailer in her area and got the dress to her just in time for the event.  However, the more I corresponded with  Mimi the more I realized that she had a story worth sharing with everyone. Please enjoy this edition of “Who is wearing Liz Fields” as told by Mimi.

"I did nothing to the garment but take up the hem. It fit me like a glove.”

“Culmination to Victory”

By Mimi Weingart

You’re born a girl. You have girl dreams. They are good dreams not illusions as pessimists claim. Cartoonists of the world have created a billion dollar industry putting girl dreams onto paper, film and video and yet when a live and flesh girl wishes on a star this is called silly. Oh. Well. I guess that makes me a “silly” too because Cinderella is my hero. People laugh when I confess such but then I explain. Cinderella has made Faith her servant and that’s pretty powerful stuff. Think about it. She continues to believe and trust in the unseen things even when the worst is upon her. So irresistible is her faith that those unseen things can’t help but to bear fruit to her hearts deepest desires.

Don’t we all wish we could cultivate such fortitude? And while doing so, shouldn’t we dress the part? When I donned my Liz Fields dress it was the first time in my life I had worn such a bold vivacious color. After a series of personal grievances staged breathlessly back to back over a period of 8 years – a failed marriage, a child diagnosed with autism, the death of a beloved grandparent, I found solace in Hagen Daz and potato chips paying a dear price for it. My physical and spiritual health suffered with each pant size gained apexing in excess of 70 pounds. My choice of clothing, all blacks, grays and a neutral cream here and there, reflected my desire to blend in unnoticed, desperate to hide my tiredness. I had lost faith in those unseen things. I no longer wished on stars. What a un-Cindy thing to do.

Recently, my 5 year old daughter Delilah, popped in a Cinderella tape her babysitter had borrowed from the Library and a flood of memories of who and what I used to be came rushing back to me. I watched Cinderella with my beautiful daughter 3 times in a row, seeing with eyes anew and becoming renourished and recommitted with every play. I decided to go back to working my Cinderella plan exactly as I thought I should as a child when my dreams came from an unadulterated place. I continually tweaked as I exercised new muscles, slowing putting all my ducks in a row, breaking new ground while keeping older proven ground fresh. It became effortless this new staying committed to my seemingly insurmountable weight loss endeavor because spiritual well being came first. The new size 8 is side benefit as far as I’m concerned allowing me to wear the colors not the style of garments per se I’ve always desired to wear with confidence.

I’m still working my plan but I can see graduation on the horizon. I now sneak a wish on stars again. I think celebration of my metamorphoses will be a blood rose red stunner. Don’t recall if there is a corresponding Princess to such a hue but tell Liz Fields that she should most certainly make one up.

"This is a picture of my daughter Delilah. She's the light of my life!"

Wedding Trend Alert: Pin-Up Girl Photo Shoot

Last week, a friend of mine asked me if I had heard about the latest wedding trend of “pin-up girl” photo shoots.  To my surprise, I had heard of this from none other than our head designer, Liz Fields.  Liz’s friend Kasia (whose garden tea party bridal shower was mentioned in the blog last month) had a pin-up girl bachelorette party just a few weekends ago!

I love this wonderful and different idea for a bachelorette party.  Who needs male strippers when you can make your girls and yourself feel beautiful, and have lasting proof to show off too!

Liz attended GWU with Kasia, and was lucky enough to be included to the bachelorette party even though she is not in the bridal party because she designed Kasia’s bridal gown and bridesmaids dresses, which will be unveiled in a blog towards the end of August!

This is a picture of Liz Fields, Kasia, and Kasia’s sister Agata

The party was hosted at Kasia’s house in Long Island NY.  There was professional hair and make-up available for everyone and a photography studio was set up in one of the emptier rooms of their house.  Everybody brought outfits,  pieces of costumes, accessories, shoes, etc and consolidated them into one “dress-up” room where girls could change as many times as they wanted throughout the night and get some shots taken.

Liz said that the photography women were amazing – ready with props and made it very easy and comfortable to pose.  They were especially good with telling each girl what to do and how to change their pose to make them look their best.

Would you consider a pin-up girl bachelorette party?  I know I am.  What are some interesting bachelorette party trends that you have heard about?

Kasia’s Bridal Shower

Last weekend was my good friend Kasia’s bridal shower.  The theme was garden tea party and we were all asked to make our own hats for the event. I was worried how my hat would turn out at first, but I soon got into the whole idea when my hat arrived in the mail ready and waiting to be decorated.

Here I am with the group!  I made the hat to match my dress of course, which is Liz Fields style #254 in case you were wondering :-)

After we were all done posing with our lovely hats it was time for games!

In this picture, I am playing a game I had never heard of before.  The idea was to roll an ice cube in your hands that had a plastic ring inside, whoever got the ring out first and on to the Bride’s finger won.  I did not… it was cold!

I did however win a game of Bridal Shower Gift Bingo, earning me another hat, which I then wore for the rest of the party.

Have you had a bridal shower recently?  What games did you play?  Did you have a special theme like Kasia?  With such a great bridal shower theme, I can’t wait until the actual wedding!

If you are planning to attend a bridal shower soon, visit www.lizfields.com and view our social occasion dresses for your party by style, or, NOW by color!  Find a store near you by searching for an authorized Liz Fields retailer today.

Who is wearing Liz Fields: Meghan Conlon!

By Guest Blogger Ariel Hahn

At Liz Fields, our mission is to design wedding dresses and social occasion dresses for real women to fall in love with.  So often, we never know who is wearing our dresses as we usually only deal with the boutiques and salons who sell our dresses.  Every once in a while however, a story comes along that reminds us our mission is working.

The first special women we would like to introduce you to was brought to us by Bel Fiore Bridal, in Marietta, GA.  Meghan Conlon is actually one of the friendly faces you would see if you were to go shopping at Bel Fiore Bridal.

Meghan’s now fiancé proposed to her last June at sunset on the beautiful beach of Marco Island, FL., how romantic!  They are going to be married on the beach this September.

Meghan and Austan

We are truly honored and excited that someone who works around bridesmaids dresses all day long has chosen one of Liz Fields original dresses as her style for the bridal party!

Here is the bridesmaids dress Meghan chose:
