Top Styles From the 84th Annual Academy Awards

As a designer of wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, and now prom dresses, there isn’t a lot of TV more fun than watching the stars get all dressed up and walk down the red carpet.    It’s a time, not only for Hollywood’s more elite to show off their personalities through fashion, but for the other designers to try out next seasons styles on the viewers.

Here were my Top 5 favorite styles from the 84th Annual Academy Awards

1.  Angelina Jolie… She always looks amazing!

2.  Gwyneth Paltrow looks stunning. Very chic!

3.  Mila Jovovich looks beautiful. So elegant!

4.  Glenn Close looks stunning!

5.  Stacy Kiebler’s dress was a major fashion highlight of the show!

Notable Mentions

Michelle Williams

Ellie Kemper

What should Kate Middleton wear at her wedding to Prince William?

Unless you have been living under a rock this morning, you have already heard that Kate Middleton and Prince William are engaged! I wish them all the happiness in the world and look forward to hearing more about their wedding plans in the months to come.  Of course, what I am most interested to hear about is what will she wear!?

So Kate, on the chance that you come across this blog, I wanted to share my top 4 picks for the Liz Fields wedding dresses that I think would look the most amazing on you (because a girl’s gotta have choices).

1. The modern one-shoulder trend is at its peak right now; and with its silky organza draped bodice, beaded appliqué, and ruffle tulle embroidered skirt it would be hard not to feel like royalty in this gown, even if your name isn’t Kate Middleton.

2. Kate appears to be all about elegant sophistication, and an ease of style, luckily that’s exactly what Liz Fields bridal gowns are about as well!  In this dress, Kate can show off her figure with the fit and flare silhouette, and wow the on-looking crowds with the original 3-D accenting chiffon flower details.

3. Of course as the future Princess of England, you can’t go wrong with the classic ballgown silhouette!   This ballgown screams “Princess” with features such as a sweetheart neckline, a beaded corset bodice with hand-tufted skirt over a layer of embroidered lace, silky organza flowers, and rosettes throughout the gown.

Liz Fields Bridal Gown Style 9108

4.  My final pick is more on the trendy side than the other three, but I have faith that Kate could pull it off without a hitch!  This bridal gown features a Square neckline, and pleated bodice with a show-stopping 3-D abstract floral embroidered skirt.  The Colored sash at waist enhances the silhouette and adds that extra pop of color.  With this bridal gown, Kate could either stick with the trendy black or choose a more traditional all white gown.

So those are my top choices, but I would love to know what yours are!  Visit www.lizfields.com and pick your favorite wedding dress for Kate to wear and leave a comment, there is nothing more fun than playing dress-up with a princess!

5 Tips to Beat the Rainy Wedding Day Blues

Ladies, I know that when you are imagining your wedding day you are probably picturing a beautiful sunny day with birds chirping, I know I am.  Unfortunately, Mother Nature often has other plans.

I happened to be staying at a hotel near the shore a few weeks ago.  The hotel was booked solid with weddings.  Little girls in adorable pink dresses, and bridesmaids carrying bouquets were running all over the place.  The previous day had been the perfect day to get married, not too hot, not too cold.  Sunday however, was pouring.  I saw a bride on her way to her ceremony looking completely stressed out.  I have to assume the rain was at least partially contributing to her stress.  Honestly I almost ran into her while getting off the elevator because her photographer had chosen the lobby as the ideal spot to do their photo shoot, not the best plan.

If you do end up with some rain on your wedding day, don’t fret, with some extra planning and a different outlook on things no one can rain on your parade.

  1. If you are planning to have any of your wedding ceremony or celebration outside, pick a venue that has a good rainy day plan.  Make sure you like your venue and photo locations for your rain plan almost as much as your outdoor choices.
  2. Pack a second pair of shoes that match your bridal gown.  Ask your bridesmaids do the same.  This way if any of you step in the mud or a puddle you are not stuck with the evidence all day.
  3. If you know a few weeks before that the chances of rain are looking good, try to find some cute umbrellas that coordinate with your wedding dress.  This could make for a nice outdoor photo opportunity without leaving you soaking wet and cold.
  4. Rainy days actually make for some very interesting photographs.  Ask your photographer for their rain ideas beforehand.  Imagine for a moment your beautiful bridal gown reflected in a puddle next to you, while you are holding your cute umbrella (which you already had on standby) then, maybe throw in some bold colored rain boots for some extra drama!
  5. Schedule an extra 10 minutes to your commute during your wedding day if rain is in the forecast.  We all know commuting to work in the rain takes longer; there is no need to worry that you are going to be late for your own wedding as well.

62nd Primetime Emmy Awards

The 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were on Sunday, and it saddens me to say that over all I was left feeling completely underwhelmed by the fashion I saw.  It used to be that you could watch the Emmys and be inspired left and right by almost every gown that came down the  Red Carpet, now, not so much.  It’s not to say that in the past the dresses were ALL good, but, the dramatic fashion forward gowns usually overruled the mundane or horrifying.  This year it felt as if everyone remembered the Emmys one or two days before the event, and ran  for whatever evening gown they could find on short notice, even if it was not extremely flattering or interesting.  It’s true there was some beautiful fashion, but they were few and far between; more on the good fashion later.

First, let’s do a quick style rundown.

What was popular this year?  Sparkles, sequins, and more sparkles!  In fact,  it seemed to be sparkles first, fit second.  Brides, when you’re searching for your perfect bridal gown do NOT take your fashion hints  from the 62nd Emmy Awards.  A perfectly fitting and flattering dress in a classic fabric will look 1000 times better on you than a flashy ill-fitting bridal gown.

Total number of glitter covered gowns I counted: 12

Another major style walking down the runway was the one-shoulder gown.  One-shoulder evening gowns can be very flattering, and give an added interest to a simple silhouette.  There is no denying that one-shoulder dresses are a very now.  Of course, it used to be that the red carpet gowns would be a window into tomorrow’s looks, rather than a reflection of current trends, but that certainly doesn’t diminish their fashion factor.

Total number of one-shoulder gowns I counted: 17

The next fashion trend I preface with a warning:  Do NOT try this at home.  Cut out dresses were scattered across Red Carpet this year, for reasons that are beyond me

I cannot name one person where this style has made their figure look better than it would have if they had worn a whole dress.  Even if you happen to be a size 0, in my humble opinion you will still look skinnier if you leave the holes for your Swiss cheese.

Total number of cut out style dresses I counted: 4 too many

As with any award show, the next day almost everyone will dole out their awards and opinions for best and worst dressed.  However, this year’s Emmy Awards warranted a little more than just best and worst in my book.

The award for the best Saloon Girl dress:  Cristina Hendrix

The award for the most ordinary dress:  Kim Kardashian

Honestly, it even looks similar to Rose Byrne’s dress from the same night.

The award for the most beautiful dress:  Lea Michelle  (Even though in my opinion this style it has been done before).

The award for the most terrifying/made me want to cry dress:  Anna Paquin

The award for the most baffling dress:  Lauren Grahm.

Lauren, I love you, you have a beautiful figure and generally a great fashion sense, what happened?

The award for the dress most flattering for the figure: Kelly Osbourne

And finally, the award for the most interesting style and best dressed overall: Tina Fey

“The Rockin’ Radio Gal”

To say that Mandy is outgoing would never begin to cover it. She is loud, boisterous, opinionated, cheerful, and she is the voice that you are most likely to hear in the morning if you turn on the radio in her city.  Mandy was born to be a radio personality. For her it’s like talking to her friends on the phone for hours, except that she gets to share it with thousands more people.  When Mandy is not on air you can probably find her in the corner music store in the local artist section.  She loves being one of the first people to discover a band.  The added bonus is being able to yell “I told you so” on air to her fans, after her unknowns become the next big thing.

For Mandy’s wedding day it is important that all eyes be on her.  She makes sure no one changes stations when she is on air, so they certainly had better not be looking away on her wedding day!  Mandy knew she had found the dress that would do just that when she saw Liz Fields original, style 9007.  Its pleating and beadwork were beautiful and flattering to her figure, but the element that put her over the top was the asymmetric full skirt. With a wedding dress like this Mandy knows she won’t have any trouble holding everyone’s attention when her day comes.

“The Romantic”

Iris was always the maker of other people’s dreams. In school, she was the one who set her friends up on dates.  She would wait at home curled up with a good love story waiting for the phone call telling her how romantic their nights had been.  She would happily listen knowing that she had been right.

After graduation, Iris knew that she was meant to be a wedding planner because she loved helping other people have their perfect night.  It wasn’t until an old friendship blossomed into a romance that she realized it was time for her to have a perfect night of her own.

For her dress, Iris wanted to go classical and romantic, and she choose a Liz Fields original, style 9013.  This strapless tulle bridal gown, with beaded and embroidered lace appliqués, and a hem treated with lace appliqués makes her feel like a character out of one of her books.  Iris is excited that she gets to be the one with the romantic wedding story to tell everyone now.

Wedding Style Tips For Hot Summer Days

It is currently 103° outside!  Just thinking about how hot it is makes me feel overheated!

I can’t help but think that on a day like today I would hate being a bride wearing a huge wedding dress with a long train.  Even if the dress is sleeveless, +100° weather is not the time to mess around!

If you are considering having your wedding on a lovely summer day, here are some styles I recommend to stay cool in while still looking gorgeous.

The dresses shown are from our Liz Fields Destination Bridal collection, and with their light chiffon and charmeuse fabrics you will feel as great as you look!

Meanwhile, don’t forget about your girls.  If your bridesmaids are dropping like flies in the heat it might just put a damper on your wedding!  I’m joking, but as someone who was a Maid of Honor just a few years ago, little things like heat can be very distracting, and you don’t want anything distracting from your day.

This style is perfect if you want your bridesmaids dresses to have a formal look during the ceremony, but a ready-to-dance look at the reception.

Keep cool, and remember that the national weather service recommends that you say in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
