When planning a wedding, children are often overlooked. The fact of the matter is that the happier the kids are on your big day, the happier everyone, especially the parents, will be. You don’t have to bend over backwards in order to make sure that children enjoy your nuptials, but there are a few simple tips that you can use in order to make sure that everyone is having the best time possible. The more everyone is enjoying themselves, the better the wedding will be for everyone involved especially the bride and groom.
It’s no secret that children love to eat, so making sure that you include a few kid friendly options on your wedding menu will make children and their parents very happy campers. If you can, ask parents ahead of time about any known food allergies to avoid a trip to the emergency room. Children often have very specific food allergies. While it’s true that some children will enjoy eating lobster and steak, most would rather have chicken fingers and fries. Giving them the option to choose is the best way to make sure that everyone is happy.
Put Them to Work
Giving children responsibilities is a win win for everyone involved. Children love to feel included, and by giving them a few simple tasks to execute, you are keeping them safely occupied and taking a little weight off of your own shoulders. Find easy chores that they can help out with and you’ll notice that not only can children be very productive, they are usually happy to help because it makes them feel important.
If you are planning on having young children at your wedding, be mindful of the time frame. Even the sweetest children can turn into little monsters if they become over tired or stay up after their usual bed time. If you think your wedding will run later into the evening, plan to have an extra “nap room” where children can go to rest and re-energize. Sometimes, all it takes it’s a short nap for a child to feel better.
Don’t Expect Perfection
Even the most well-mannered children have moments from time to time. Weddings can be over stimulating and over exciting for some children, so don’t expect perfect behavior the whole way through. Lowering your expectations will help you to manage your feelings should something go wrong. If the idea of having child related disruptions at your wedding just doesn’t seem feasible, you should probably arrange to have an adult only affair. Finding arrangements for child care is not your responsibility, but you can encourage your guests to share babysitters and make recommendations on whom to hire if you should happen to know anybody.
