“The Flower Child”

Cloey often feels that she was born in the wrong decade.  Unsurprisingly her nickname in school was always the Happy Hippy.  Cloey lives for the spring time when she can spend hours in her garden tending to her flowers, and then when she is done, photographing them.  During the colder months she can be found in her basement/art studio blowing glass to sell at craft fairs. This year Cloey has another reason to look forward to the warm weather…her wedding is coming up!  This June, Cloey will be marrying her fellow glassblower, in a beautiful gazebo overlooking a lavender field. Cloey is looking for a dress which speaks to her calm nature loving personality, while still being cool and stylish; Liz Fields original, style 8231 did just that! Cloey’s dress is long and strapless, and she loves how the chiffon flows to her feet.  Her favorite detail in the dress is of course the bands on the bodice which have sunburst beading on them (how perfect)!  Cloey is thinking that she might just add some flowers in her hair from her own garden for the finishing touch on her perfect summer wedding day.

Choosing a Dress: The Mother’s Day Edition

Let’s face it, buying a dress is stressful no matter who you are.  Even as a mother of the bride or groom you might begin feeling like YOU’RE the one getting married with all of the decisions you have to make!  In honor of mother’s day I wanted to show appreciation for all the hard working, ever-caring moms out there, (you know who you are) by giving you some tips when choosing a dress for your son or daughter’s wedding day.

  • The first thing I would recommend is to simply begin thinking about what style, length and price range you are interested in. If you can’t think of anything off the top of your head, turn to magazines for some ideas.
  • When it is time to go shopping for a dress, if you are the mother of the bride, bring her along!  Your daughter will find it much less stressful than finding her own dress so she will be happy to do it. She might also have some ideas of what colors would complement the wedding party. You want to be sure that you don’t clash with the wedding party when it comes time for group pictures.
  •  The next person you should check with is the other mother. If you are the mother of the groom it is customary to wait for the mother of the bride to buy her dress first.  Whoever goes first, it is a good idea to have a conversation about what length and level of formality you would both like to wear.

At Liz Fields you will find a wide range of styles and silhouettes that will fit your budget.

Here are a few styles I have personally selected that could work for a mother of the bride or groom dress.

“The Greek Goddess”

Lo-Ve-La by Liz Fields Destination Wedding Dress Style #8281

Julie is someone who if you looked too quickly, might be thought of as somewhat of a tom-boy.

When Julie is not spending time with her fiancé, she has her nose in a fantasy book (sometimes when she is spending time with him too).  In fact she even has plans to write her own fantasy novel soon!

Not many people can picture her in a dress, and even less have seen her in one. Secretly though, she knows exactly how she wants to look on her wedding day. She imagines herself as the great Greek goddess Aphrodite floating on a cloud with her love, looking down and waving at the mere mortals below her. In this dress Julie gets to live this fantasy on her wedding day.  She is wearing a Liz Fields original, Style 8281. This is a long dress with a sweetheart halter neckline; it has braided detailing and the pleated skirt with a train which makes her feel like she like the Goddess she truly is.

“The Canine Crusader”

Kristen considers herself to be one of the luckier people in the world because she gets loving kisses all day long!  Not by her soon to be husband, mind you, but by the other loves of her life…her dogs!  Kristen spends her day working as an adoption consultant for dogs at her local shelter. Knowing that one of her canine friends is being sent home with the perfect family is Kristen’s favorite feeling in the world. When Kristen goes home for the day she is again bombarded with wet kisses, still not from her fiancé, but by her own three dogs.  Only after her puppies have welcomed her home does her guy get his turn to say hello.  No worries though, he knows she is worth the wait.  Although Kristin loves spending her days covered in fur and doggie kisses, she is looking forward to feeling special, and even dare we say, sexy, on her wedding day.  Kristen is thrilled to be walking down the aisle in this luxurious platinum satin Liz Fields original dress, style 9003, with a mermaid silhouette and gorgeous beading and embroidery details.  When Kristen’s fiancé sees her in this dress he will know for sure that he is actually the lucky one.

Fields of Dreams

We chatted with FIDM Grad and bridal and special occasion designer Liz Fields, who’s making women’s dreams come true with deeply fabulous bridal and special occasion dresses. Here’s what she had to say about her evening gowns, FIDM education, and accessorizing a formal look. –Angel

How did you get into the bridal industry?

LF: Growing up, my father created a database computer program for a big name in the special occasion industry and it spread from company to company. He became a fixture in these company’s factories, bringing me to work with him where I would be left with the designers to play and sketch.

Which celebrity would you love to design a gown for?

LF: Sophia Loren – past or present, she embodies class, elegance, and sex appeal for me. If I could dress all women, they would all dress in a way that makes them feel like Sophia Loren. I think that she proves that you do not have to be stick-thin to be attractive. She is a curvaceous, real Sophia lorenwoman. What a beauty!

How has your FIDM education helped in your field?

LF: I am really proud of my FIDM education. I really believe that I owe my my understanding of garment construction and fit to Ms. Fischer, my patternmaking teacher. I also took a lot away as far as flat sketching and communication to sewers and factories. When you work with overseas factories, the communication through language can have its barriers but if you understand how to communicate what you want through sketching then you are all set!

What makes your designs stand out from other bridal and bridesmaids gowns?

LF: I have a really romantic, sensitive sense of style and I love clean lines and historic details, which I think give most of my gowns a vintage look with a modern twist. All of the dresses and gowns are offered in sizes 0-28.

Why are your bridesmaids gowns also suitable for Prom?

LF: I design my bridesmaid dresses without thinking of them as bridesmaid dresses. First I design the dresses that my friends would want to wear, then I tweak them to make them more compatible for different sizes and shapes. My dresses are moderately priced, and they are customizable with detachable details, choices of length, and choice of over 900 color combinations, which make them perfect for a Prom girl that is looking for something different. What can be more unique than customizing your own Prom dress?

What are the necessary accessories to complete a formal look?

LF: If you’re wearing a strapless gown, opt for a statement necklace and more understated earrings. You never want each piece to be a statement piece. If your dress has a lot of details, go with some drop earrings and skip the other jewelry, as to not distract from the beauty of your gown. If when you look in the mirror, your eyes do not focus anywhere but keep bouncing from item to item, you should probably take something off.

What else should customers know about Liz Fields?

LF: I am always accessible and plan to stay that way, whether it is through email (LizFields@LizFields.com), Facebook (Facebook.com/byLizFields) or Twitter (Twitter.com/byLizFields), women can always share stories and ask for tips.
