What Brides Should NOT Expect From Bridesmaids

Now, as a bride, we understand that choosing your few favorite best friends can be a difficult task, but it’s important to never ask the one’s that you expect to give you some unnecessary gifts. What the bride needs to understand is that your bridesmaids are taking on enough of a financial and emotional responsibility simply by saying, “Yes.” Therefore, it’s important to work with them and accept what each one can offer you – on a support level, not financial.

So, with all that being said, what are the top 5 things that brides should never EXPECT from their bridesmaids? Let us go ahead and tell you.

Don’t Expect Weight-Loss

One of the worst things you can expect from your bridesmaids is that they will lose an extreme amount of weight before your wedding. Whether you feel they’re a little overweight, or if you’re worried they may stress eat – you asked them to be your bridesmaid as they are, not as you want them to be.

Don’t Plan On Receiving Some BIG Gift

Think about it this way – your bridesmaids are already spending money on the potential destination wedding, bridal shower, bachelorette party, as well as their dresses and hair/make-up. Do you really think it’s fair to expect some massive, expensive gift? Honestly, the best thing for you to do is just be happy they showed up and have been supporting you throughout all your wedding stress. They’re emotional support, not financial.

Don’t Make The Bachelorette A Destination

Trips can be expensive – that’s the bottom line. As we’ve mentioned before, it’s important to keep their budget in mind, just as you keep your wedding budget in mind. The bachelorette doesn’t have to be in Vegas or somewhere international, it just has to be somewhere fun where all you girls can take out her single life with a bang!

Don’t Think They Can Read Your Mind

Yes, they may be your best friends, but if they haven’t been able to read your mind over the past few years, they still probably can’t now. Therefore, you need to be vocal about what you want and don’t just let the bridesmaids battle it out to make the decision for you.

Don’t Anticipate Them Being Perfect

This is one of the worst things you could do – and this is the cardinal rule. It wraps in the above four tipsr while also bringing in other points. Your bridesmaids are going through a lot of emotions as their best friend gets married off into the real world, and weddings are no cheap affair. So, accept them for who they are, you asked your bridesmaids individually for a reason and it’s best to just trust they’ll be there for you as often and as best as they can.

My Journey to Capitol Hill: Fight against Counterfeiters

If you don’t know already, Intellectual Property theft affects every industry and as a small business owner, it is something I deal with and fight against every day because it makes it very hard to survive.   When you have an idea or design and you work hours upon hours, pour blood, sweat and money into starting your business and putting your ideas out there and then you find your images, your name, your dress designs on thousands of rogue websites selling counterfeit versions of you….well, you can imagine the frustration!

What makes it worse is when you hear countless stories from brides who ordered from these sites, being scammed into receiving a dress that is nothing like the one in the photo and then have nobody to turn to because it’s not actually the designer’s dress.  On our website, LizFields.com, we have created a “Buyer Beware” section to try and educate women shopping for wedding dresses or bridesmaids dresses on how to spot these fakes and we even created a tool where you can type in the web address where you saw a Liz Fields dress and we will tell you right away if this is a counterfeit site or an authorized retailer.  Unfortunately, not many take the time or even think to check with us before making a purchase.

For a little while now, I have been in contact with the US Chamber of Commerce Global Intellectual Property Center, which does so much to support small businesses like mine from IP theft and educate us on what we can do to protect ourselves.  Recently, they gave me the opportunity to be part of a panel of speakers at a Small Business event at Capitol Hill.  Yesterday this briefing took place and I was able to tell my story to Congress staffers with the hope that it would resonate and some reforms could begin to take place.

That's me on Capitol Hill!! :)

That’s me on Capitol Hill!! :)

I loved Washington, DC since going to college there, but now, I have a renewed respect for all those who work to try and make reforms on behalf of us.  It’s no easy task…and as I saw yesterday, a lot goes into getting these conversations started and then keeping them going to the finish line.  Regardless, it reminded me that we are so lucky to live in a country where these conversations are even possible.

I had the pleasure of meeting some amazing people and I look forward to continuing my effort, no matter how small, in getting heard and reform started.

For now, please educate yourselves and others around you.  If the price is too good to be true, then it is probably not authentic.  If you aren’t sure about the Liz Fields dress listing you are seeing on a site, check with us on our Buyer Beware section.  You can also check out Bridal Beware more more information on counterfeit gowns and shopping tips.  If it’s something else you’re shopping for, check with the company’s website to make sure you are purchasing from an authorized retailer.   I will be posting some resources and links to this blog shortly so please stay tuned and I’ll keep you updated on my journey.

Advice for Having a Small Wedding

Bridesmaid Dresses
In some ways, having a small wedding will be much different than the big wedding you see and read about. Having an intimate wedding can be the best route for couples who want to only include friends and close family. Small weddings can be extremely romantic, and allow couples to spend money on other things such as the honeymoon or buying a new home. For most people, a small wedding is a wedding that include less than 200 people. However, most truly “small” weddings are those that consist of less than 100 guests.
One of the first situations you will encounter when planning a small wedding is the reactions of others. A lot of people will have negative reactions, but don’t let them affect you or your decision. You will probably hear a lot of “yes, we planned on having a small wedding too”. People who think it can’t be done simply did not try hard enough. On the other hand, you’re also likely encounter people who envy you because they went through a lot of stress to plan a huge wedding and wish they’d taken a simpler route. Either way, stick to your guns and don’t give into people’s negative reactions.

Believe it or not, a small intimate wedding can create lasting memories that you and your guests can cherish for the rest of your lives. Larger weddings have a tendency to become overwhelming. A small wedding gives everyone the opportunity to enjoy the details and really get to know one another. Another great perk of having a small wedding is the opportunity it gives your guests to create new friendships. A major complaint for a lot of couples on their wedding day is that they didn’t spend enough time with their guests. Having a small wedding eliminates this problem. Small weddings can be highly personal and create the most long lasting memories and allow you to pay more attention to the details such as the bridesmaid dresses and flowers.

If you are having a small wedding, pick the venue wisely. There is no reason to spend a lot of money. Remember that even if you chose to have the wedding at a private home, expenses can still add up. Most venues provide seating, dinnerware, etc. When having your wedding at a private home, these things will have to be rented. The cost of renting these items can add up quickly so remember to plan within your budget. This allows you to free up money that can be well spent on a beautiful bridesmaid dress or custom wedding dress.

The biggest advantage of having a smaller wedding is the reduction of stress and planning involved. People have the tendency to get lost in the wedding planning process and lose sight of the true purpose of having a wedding. This is easy to avoid when you have a small, intimate gathering of friends and loved ones.

Be An Amazing Bridesmaid

Custom Wedding Dresses

It’s important to offer a bride the right amount of love and support on her big day. Sometimes bridesmaids can get carried away with great expectations or selfish motives, which make it hard for the bride to enjoy her wedding. While mistakes are often unintentional, here are some tips to help you be the best bridesmaid you can be on your friend’s wedding day.

Wedding Planning

Lend a helping hand when it comes to wedding planning and arrangements. Rather than step in on the actual wedding day, make yourself available to help the bride throughout the entire process. You’ll be surprised at how much offering your support throughout the planning experience will be of service to the bride and her groom. Knowing she has someone to rely on and take the weight off of her shoulders will be a very gratifying relief. The best way to determine what the bride needs help with is to ask. Whether she needs you to host the bridal shower, or help with the seating arrangements, you can rest assured that there will be plenty for you to help out with if you offer. Both the bride and the groom will be appreciative of your kind efforts.

Stay Positive

Brides can easily become overwhelmed and have plenty of “moments”. Rather than feeding into her emotions, it’s important as a bridesmaid for you to remain calm and positive. If the bride is overly emotional or stressed out, don’t criticize or become annoyed. She most-likely has a lot on her mind and it’s your job to keep her grounded and offer positive feedback and words of encouragement. It’s important to help out where you can with the physical arrangements, but being there for moral and emotional support is just as, if not more important. Keep a positive outlook will eventually wear off on the bride and help her to overcome any hiccups she may experience throughout the wedding planning process and up until the nuptials.

Be Happy About the Bridesmaid Dress

The bride is by no means required to ask you for your input when choosing a bridesmaid dress, but if she does make sure to keep your opinions objective. Base your feedback and factors such as affordability and how flattering it is to your body rather than on personal style. Whether the bride picks a wonderful dress (in your opinion) or not, it is your job to seem appreciative and wear the custom bridesmaid dress with a smile on your face. If you love it, show how thankful you are and if not, go out of your way to make sure you don’t say anything that might hurt the bride’s feelings. After all, you’ll only be wearing the dress for one day.

Keeping Calm on Your Wedding Day

Custom Wedding Dresses

Planning a wedding can be stressful, but getting overwhelmed by it is no means a requirement. When you’re getting ready for your big day, don’t let planning the event get in the way of enjoying yourself. Planning a wedding should be an exhilarating experience that you take with you for a long time. There is so much to be done in order to plan a wedding that it’s easy to forget the purpose of what you’re doing. Here are some simple tips that can help you stay on track remember the reason you are planning the event in the first place.

Dress Alterations

Remember to have your dress altered a week before your wedding. The purpose of having your dress altered a week before the big day is to ensure that it will fit like a glove. If you wait more than a week you will spread yourself too thin, and if you wait more than a week than you may risk your dress not fitting due to weight gain or loss.

Involve Others

Never feel like you are “putting someone out” during your wedding planning. People love weddings, and they love being a part of the planning process. If anything, you’ll be doing them a favor by inviting them to help you plan your wedding. Take full advantage of this and enlist as much help as you need. This is the one time in your life where people will be more than willing to do whatever you want! While this is “your” day, it is also your groom’s day, your parent’s day, and everyone who loves and cares about you will be delighted to help share in the experience.

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

When you obsess over the miniscule details you are setting yourself up to be stressed out. If you hired a wedding planner, let them take care of the small stuff. If a wedding planner wasn’t a part of your budget, allow your friends and family members to take care of the little details that you just don’t have time to attend to. This will allow you to stay focused on the big picture and remember why you are tying the knot in the first place.

Reduce the amount of stress you incur by choosing the right wedding dress. Picking the right dress designer can significantly reduce the amount of things that you have to worry about on your wedding day. Make sure you find a reputable designer that you can trust to handle your custom wedding dress.

Imperfections are Okay

Sometimes the imperfections of your wedding are what will make is the most memorable. Don’t freak out if something goes wrong or if everything doesn’t go 100% according to plan. Little snafu’s will only make the experience more real, and people like real. Instead of taking mistakes to heart, smile and move on while keeping in mind the reason you are celebrating.

Most importantly, remember to take a step back from time to time and take in the experience. It’s easy to get caught up in the planning process and forget to make valuable memories out of it. Whenever you can, take a moment to sit back and enjoy your wedding.

Tips for Having a Large Wedding

custom wedding dresses

Having a large wedding is a great way to celebrate the love between you and your partner. Large weddings will be memorable for everyone involved, and planning a large wedding does not have to be stressful. Here are a few tips to help you make the most out of your wedding planning experience without becoming overwhelmed or stressed out.

Vendors

Hire vendors you can trust. Having a reliable list of vendors at your service will help prevent a total wedding meltdown. Enlisting a group of experienced professionals will help you to feel like you are in good hands and reduce the amount of time that you spend worried about things not getting done. In order to find the right vendors, consult your friends and family. Use vendors that others have had success with and don’t be afraid to ask people for recommendations. If someone did a good job for another person, chances are they will do a good job for you too.

Reputable vendors are easy to find when you enlist the help of co-workers and friends. Chances are, everyone you know has either had a wedding or knows someone who has. Enlisting your personal network to help you hire vendors will take the load off of your back and ensure that you’re in reliable hands.

Get Help

Instead of asking for wedding gifts, ask your loved ones for wedding help. You’d be surprised at what can get accomplished when people come together and pool their resources. Having the help of others will be the best wedding present you’ll receive. The more people willing to help you, the better. Don’t hesitate to delegate certain aspects of your wedding to people that you trust. For those you have less confidence in, find small things that are still necessary.

Planning

If you decide to have a large wedding make sure that you set aside plenty of time for planning. It may not be feasible for you to have a large wedding if you are the type of person who does things last minute or if you never find yourself having enough time in the day. If this sounds like you, a large wedding may be an invitation for stress. Make sure that you are able to set aside plenty of time to devote strictly to planning your wedding. If you try and plan a large wedding on a whim or on too short of notice, you may find yourself in messy situation. If you have the option of hiring a wedding planner, by all means do so. A wedding planner will reduce the amount of responsibilities on your plate and free up a lot of time for you to enjoy the wedding planning process with your partner.

Tips for Your Rehearsal Dinner

Custom Wedding Dresses

Your rehearsal dinner is a great opportunity to bring your friends and family together for your special occasion. Integrating the friends and family of the bride and groom should be a fun experience where new friendships are readily able to blossom. Here are some tips to help you make the most out of your rehearsal dinner.

Sending out invitations for your rehearsal dinner is a great way to allow people to prepare for the event. The invitations shouldn’t be as formal as your wedding invitations, but should allow guests to know when and where the dinner is as well as what to expect as far as attire is concerned. Make sure you include directions to the location and state whether or not there will be transportation.

Pick a theme that incorporates both the bride and the groom’s personality. Having a theme may seem like a chore, but in actuality it will help you determine the food and the location easier than if you don’t have a theme. If you want to really impress your guests, have a backyard picnic or a buffet on a boat. These unique ideas will be unlike any rehearsal dinner your guests have attended in the past.

Everyone who is involved in your wedding should be invited to your rehearsal dinner. Dates of adults and grandparents of both parties should also be invited. Make sure you are thorough in your invitations as not to risk leaving anyone out and possible hurting their feelings.

Don’t be afraid to go the traditional route and have a formal sit down dinner. You can rarely go wrong with tradition and it’s a nice way to make your guests comfortable as they have probably been through a similar experience. Most restaurants have private rooms that are available for you to rent for your rehearsal dinner.

Have an informal meet and greet before the dinner so that people can get to know one another ahead of time. Try and seat like-minded individuals near one another so that they will have things to talk about over dinner. One of the most exciting parts of a wedding is the opportunity to forge new friendships.

Also, it’s important not to serve the same food as you’ll be having at your wedding. Make sure that you have a variety to offer your guests. For instance, if you are serving American food at your wedding, try for Italian or French food at the rehearsal dinner. Creating an unforgettable environment for your guests will give them something to look back on fondly for the rest of their lives. Creating great memories if one of the best parts of having a wedding and a rehearsal dinner.
